The Secretary

This is just a beautiful movie.
It's one of the few movies that I can watch over and over.

Maggie Gyllenhaal is absolutely adorable and incredibly sexy as Lee Holloway, a young woman who is a cutter - someone who cuts herself to avoid inner pain, to feel she is alive, to take comfort in the pain itself and the healing. She has recently been released from a mental institution for attempted suicide, and is placed into the care of her amazingly dysfunctional family. She begins cutting herself again, until her new boss, E. Edward Grey (an excellent James Spader reminiscent of "Sex, Lies and Videotape"), slowly brings her into a dominant/submissive relationship. Their relationship grows and transforms both characters with utter grace and sensitivity. James Spader has perfected sexual torment to a fine degree. He was convincing as the sadist who is ashamed of his dark urges, but Lee is so submissive that he can't help exploiting his position as the employer. And so Lee gets many a spanking for typos, and things progress from there. Spader plays Grey perfectly, portraying some of the most genuine inner conflict I have ever seen on-screen.

The story is surprisingly funny and light-hearted both subtly and overtly in places, utterly charming in others, sad in several, and heart-warming overall. The direction is superb, the colors and sets are absolutely gorgeous and rich in color....everything about this film is stunning. It is not shocking, it is not pornographic, but it is sensual and sexual.

Lee's transformation is, of course, the focal point of the film, but there are other layers to appreciate and savor as well. This is an enjoyable ride that allows those unfamiliar with BDSM to see a tiny glimpse of two peoples' unique version of it, but it's also more than that. The "more than that" is really difficult to describe, I'm sorry, but it's a beautifully tender love story. I highly recommend it if you haven't seen it already.

Now that we've shared this tender moment,,,
"You filthy-minded slut, crawl over here and lick my balls."

I loved this movie. I've seen it twice. It's one of the sexiest love stories I've ever watched on the screen. I'm so glad there's someone else who enjoyed it.

I'm just trying to keep all us dirty bloggers together as a group...lol.

What I find interesting about this film - and is true of many D/s relationships in general - is that Lee (the submissive) has more contol in the relationship than Mr. Grey (the dominant). She sets the terms by which the relationship will be conducted, seemingly for the first time in her entire life (including the relationships with her family). Lee finds love and desire in Mr. Grey, and pursues it while healing her own shattered psyche in the process.

And I have to say those Gyllenhalls sure can act. Maggie, like her brother Jake, consistantly turns in amazing performances like this one.

You sure have that movie down pat along with all the emotions and complex dynamics that it contains.

And, as any submissive who is fully aware of herself, yes they are actually the ones with all the control.

I literally watched this film last night. I rented it a few years ago and finally bought it this week. Such an amazing story of a BDSM relationship. I find it lovely and arousing at the same time. Of course it helps that Spader is one of my favorite actors and Gyllenhalls is beautiful ;)

I watched Maggie Gyllenhaal in "Mona Lisa Smile" last night. She shines as Giselle, a sexually daring college student for the times in which the movie is set.

I read an interesting bit of trivia about the movie. Gwyneth Paltrow was offered the part of Lee Holloway first. Not sure why she didn't do it. My favorite of her films is "Great Expectations," a modern day version of the Dickens classic. Although it's a little dark and twisted, it's doesn't have any BDSM connotations although there is some misguided, but deliberate cruelty. It has stunning visuals and a great soundtrack.

my favorite film.
